Why the Murder of Tyre Nichols Means We Should Ban Assault Weapons

Joe Biden is demanding an assault weapons ban as retribution for the murder of Tyre Nichols, insulting the victims of police brutality as well as their families and exposing the underlying reasons for gun control.

In the State of the Union Address, President Joe Biden addressed the murder of Tyre Nichols by quoting his mother where she said, “Something good must come from this.” Biden went on to say something good would be to ban assault weapons, as if there was any relationship between citizens owning firearms and policing murdering innocent civilians by mob assault.

The reason the second amendment exists is to protect individuals from tyranny, specifically from government agents who are threatening people’s lives. Biden demanding private citizens be banned from owning any kind of weapon in response to the police brutally murdering a citizen is beyond insensitive, especially considering the assault weapons ban he brags about passing did not apply to police officers or government officials in general.

The contrast between the issue Biden is addressing and the right that he is trying to take away reveals the nature behind gun control.

Police abusing their power to murder citizens is an issue that needs to be addressed, and it has nothing to do with whether or not citizens are allowed to have certain types of weapons. Not to mention the assault weapons bans arbitrary weapons without banning weapons of similar capability or that making something illegal doesn’t stop people from doing them. For example, murder is illegal, but it does not stop police officers from murdering people.

Changing acceptable police practices, eliminating qualified immunity, and creating policies that make police have to be accountable for their behavior are a start. However, the family of Tyre Nichols and other victims of police brutality will never get back what was stolen from them.
