Till We Have Faces

I did not understand most of the book, I must confess. I tend to view things in the light of how I know the author, and what I think they might be saying. My goal is not to preach any new thing, not that preaching is bad, but because I am bad. For most of the things I have written in my life, I intended to impress and earn approval, sometimes admiration from the people who read. But this time around, I pray that it might be different. I genuinely need an outlet for the things I read, to soak into them and engrave them on my mind. Words and passages to fill my head, so that I can meditate on it day and night while I seek to know the Lord. I am passing through a very hard time in my spiritual life, where I seldom take up a Bible. I dread reading it because I dread the boredom that comes from knowing that the whole story points to Christ and that there might be no more plot twists. The main reason though, is because I do not have the same fire I had a couple of years back.

Recently, I found refuge in the library again. I prayed to the Lord that He may give me a new found joy in reading, and seeing Him through unlikely outlets. I took up this book, “Till We Have Faces,” and immediately felt a dread that I feel these days; maybe I am no longer the kid with the book. That was all that ever set me apart before. Now, I am no longer her, but it is a good thing; I can reinvent myself.

Through C.S Lewis’ eyes, I was able to see and understand a hope that can only be seen through eyes like children’s. He explores lands, dreams, thoughts, all too deep to say plainly, but yet so clearly and masterfully articulated in words of the poets, hymns, and fairy tales. C.S was truly gifted with an imagination that relentlessly, yet piously, seeks to see the face of God, and make it known to others.

But what does seeking a face mean? Is it hidden? Non-existent? Plain? Beautiful? Why do we need to intimately know the Creator’s face as His prized creation? How can you know a face that is so intimately concealed in the wrappings of space, time, and mystery? How is it revealed for me to search?

We need to know Him because He is the answer. When we see His face, there will no longer be any need for the questions we’ve been asking ourselves as we, as though blind, grope our way through this world. That face! That face! The face of truth, the face of time, the face of reason, the face of the sun and of the moon. That face! That face!

That face, we shall see, when we ourselves have faces. Here are my favorite excerpts from the book “ Till We Have Faces.”

We need to know Him because He is the answer.
