Iteration Nine. Chapter 1

The AppBuilder Story

Part Two

So you might have followed on from our first article were we decide to try to automatically build native Android apps. If not check it out here.

Building an App automatically, wasn’t quite as simple as we would have thought.

Our first apps lacked so much basic functionality that we all come to expect in an app, such as pull-to-refresh, image display, etc... The code was not as clean and readable as we would have liked, after all it is the generated code that is the real value within this project.

However, we saw the huge potential. IF we could nail the functionality and get the AppBuilder to create clean code that complies every time, then we were onto a winner.

So this time we set ourselves two goals:

This was pretty easy figuring out which object’s attributes were images within an API, by finding image style urls, urls ending in .jpg or .png. Then using that information to format a view correctly.

Recipe List

This was not as easy as identifying images. The goal was to create Source Code that was neat, properly formatted, compartmentalised and with clear class names.

This would mean that any developer, that automatically creates their own app using the AppBuilder, would easily be able to become familiar with the code and add functionality to the new App. Simple!

When the AppBuilder creates Apps it makes no assumptions as to the Business Logic that is needed within your App or what the UI should be, that is left up to the developers.

In future posts we will show you how quick it can be to automatically build an App with AppBuilder, change the UI and add some Business Logic.
