Lexapros and Cons

In may 2018 I graduated from college. I spent my four years there waiting for an epiphany that never came. As I left the stage on graduation day, clutching my placeholder diploma, I felt as though…

The Connection between Mental Strength and Physical Strength

You cannot have one without the other.

What does mental strength even mean? Being mentally strong simply translates to believing in yourself.
Acceptance is the most crucial building block in developing mental strength. You can only exude confidence when you “get” yourself when you are at peace with who you are. When you begin to understand yourself, you may find good things and bad things. Good things give you strength and bad things pull you down. Most people just stop here, they accept the good/bad and go on living their life. I say, instead of stopping why don’t you pause and figure out how to become better.
So second is to take action to become a better version of yourself. Set a goal and start working towards it. You know you can’t reach it today (and that’s okay, that’s acceptance) but one day, because you kept moving, you will be able to. Nobody is born with a superpower, you can only build it.
The third building block is self-dependence. Can you motivate yourself day after day to accomplish a goal? How self-sustaining is your thought process? This is where the real struggle is. The everyday life can easily distract you and fail to inspire. You might seek encouragement from your family and friends. It may not happen. What you can do is devise mechanisms to help you overcome this. Listening to successful people on podcasts, motivational music or even watching an inspiring movie can boost your motivation.

Running puts my physical and mental strength to test. After a few rounds when my body starts to give up, my willpower pushes me to continue. And it helps me to do it every day, a little bit better. My mental muscle is the biggest cheerleader in building a healthy and strong body.

When you exercise, your body releases a mix of hormones — endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin. These happy hormones create an action-reward-action cycle. You feel incredible after a run (or workout) which motivates you to step up your game the next day. The reward is not limited to happiness; it is also an affirmation of your ability and strength. You think to yourself “Wow, I did it”. That gives you so much power and control in your life. Plus it feeds into the ‘action’ and ‘self-dependence’ factors in developing mental strength.
Every time I improve my run distance, I feel as though I am breaking my barriers and building a healthier fitter “me”. Being able to run that extra step fuels my courage and willingness to do it all over again.

Your life is your responsibility and you have the power and discipline to make it happen. And a strong body and mind are essential for that.
