My Top Three Tips for a Successful RV Experience in Mexico

Nomading Mexico

My husband and I have been snowbirding it for the past seven years, but decided we’d like to spend this winter in Mexico rather than at our homestead south of Quartzsite, Arizona. We chose to travel with an organized caravan (Caravanas de Mexico — a complete review of this company coming soon) on a 3-month tour that started at Reynosa, Mexico just south of Brownsville, Texas on January 8th, 2022 and will end on April 1st, 2022 when we cross back into the US at Mariposa, Arizona, north of Nogales, Mexico. There are SO many things you need to do to prepare for an extended trip to Mexico in an RV, but after completing this epic journey, three things really stood out for us, and I would like to share them with you here:

Our caravan consisted of 13 rigs, and I was the only person on the tour (besides our Mexican guide) who could speak a word of Spanish. I am not a native Spanish speaker. I actually spent the last couple of years studying the language, both on my own and with the help of on-line tutors and conversation partners, and I am able to manage adequately in most situations: at restaurants, stores, gas stations, speaking with taxi drivers, doctors, federales, etc. This greatly facilitated so many of our interactions and provided my husband and me a degree of independence the others in our group lacked, because we could venture out on our own without having to rely constantly on the support of our native tour leader. Pointing and gesturing can only get one so far, and once you get out of touristy, resort areas, no one speaks English (nor should they), and if you can’t communicate, things can get very frustrating. Besides, if you intend to spend an extended amount of time in a foreign country, it makes sense that you learn a bit of the language, culture, and history first.
