8 Reasons To Start A Business During Catastrophe

Starting a business at any time can be one of the scariest, most stressful, most rewarding challenges anybody can undertake. But what about starting one during a global crisis, when literally thousands of other businesses are shutting down? It sounds crazy right?

Well, I thought so too.

Then I thought, all of the best things I ever did were called crazy by one person or another. First I got my degree in a subject I cared about, not a field I planned a career in. Then I left a lucrative, stable, boring, position to pursue a more passion based career in digital start ups, and I began insisting I work entirely from home, successfully by the way.

These were all considered off the wall decisions by my friends and colleagues, but I am so glad I made each of them. Besides, most of the greatest founders of businesses and industries were thought to be a few fries short of a happy meal at one point by their peers. So maybe it isn’t such a bad idea after all.

Enter the Covid-19 virus. It decimated global economies and is even still leaving a tragic toll of human life in its wake.

I lost a high profile, high paying, executive leadership position in a company that had to shut down because of it. So did my best friend. We probably could have gotten our positions back in 6 months to a year if we had waited, but who has the patience? Especially when we had always dreamed of starting our own business anyways. This seemed like the push we needed.

We were incredibly lucky to have enough personal capital to be able to launch the business with several months of burn, without taking out any loans or credit cards or begging for funding in any way. I know this is not always the case, but I have done the other things in the past, and they are not the end of an idea, I encourage you to try.

So we did it, we started a business, in the middle of a global pandemic that was shutting down everyone around us. We chose to stay in a market that we had experience in and knew we loved, so we started a full service digital marketing and advertising agency (it also helped that we could do all of the work to set this up while remaining quarantined).

To stay true to our NW values we wanted to structure the agency around helping to grow small businesses, even if it meant we had to charge lower rates.

The only reason we actually succeeded, is because we saw the real need that the current crises had created. Small businesses wanted to market their products, but simply did not have the resources to pay for full service marketing. There was not a single agency that was some form of relief pricing package or restart program to build funds for companies pro bono so they could afford to reinvest in our long term strategies.

So that’s what we did, keeping in mind that our initial goal was to help small businesses and make a difference that people didn’t expect to come from a marketing agency, it seemed the obvious choice. And it was wildly successful. How could a brand new agency with no name recognition, no portfolio, and no resources book 4 clients in their first week? It was insane. It hasn’t stopped there either.

So I thought about it, about what really made the difference for us, this could be information that could be revolutionary for young people all over the world who are looking to start a business. I asked my mentors, my friends, my family, my colleagues, and most importantly my clients, what they thought made the difference.

When all the answers were compiled, I had 8 great reasons why my business was successful when it shouldn’t have been, and 8 great things you should consider when you think about starting yours.
