Hour 1.5- 5

What are Wells’ main arguments against the existing lynching laws?

Wells- Barnett argument against the lynching of Black men for the so called rapes they committed against white women was ridiculous and that they were being called rapist for what was consensual encounters. Black men were being hunted by white men because white women were afraid to tarnish their reputations so they claimed they were raped when in fact they were not. This proclamation gave white men the excuse needed to lynch black folk. Wells- Barnett also notes that white men who raped Black women were not in the firing line and were rarely if ever punished. Whereas Black men, regardless of the fact if they did or did not commit the deed were killed.

How is her essay structured?

Wells- Barnett essay is structured in a way readers can follow along easily and understand what she is trying to say. She has cited many cases and tells of each of them while highlighting the inconsistencies and the irony of each case. She cites other publications that published the cases and the publications don’t give all the facts or are misconstrued.

What is her call(s) to action? How are people to address this problem?

Wells- Barnett basically encourages Black Society to unite themselves and use their movement to make important impacts to improve by using their outrage for how they are being treated. She gives many examples on how to fight back including boycotting “The white man’s dollar is his god, and to stop this will be to stop outrages in many localities.”

How does Wells’ leadership approach compare and contrast to that of Lysistrata in Aristophanes’ play?

Both Wells- Barnet and Lysistrata’s leadership approach are successful to some extent. Both propose the idea of withholding certain elements until their demands are met. However, Wells proposes evacuation while Lysistrata’s method involves withholding sex until the men do what they want.

What are her most memorable lines? What makes them memorable?

What makes these lines memorable is that they are trying to rake back the control and are taking justice into their own hands. My favorite Quote of hers is “God helps those who helps themselves” Because I relate most strongly to this. I’m a big believer in going out and making things happen for yourself. Praying and pleading with higher powers doesn’t get you anywhere if you just sit around doing nothing. I do believe that a higher power provides avenues for us but we have to find them and work towards them.

To what extent does her leadership come across as gendered? If you did not know this essay/pamphlet was written by a woman, could you figure that out from her writing?

I don’t think that her leadership comes across gendered instead they seem to be geared to both sexes of the Black community. Sh talks more about the cases involving black men because those were really the only supposed crimes that were being punished. Her essay is geared to the black community regardless of sex, genders, and age. If I hadn’t known that this passage was written by a woman I think I probably thought a male author wrote it.

What references to the ancient world (either the cultures of Greece and Rome or the Hebrew/Christian Bible)? What is Wells point in making these references?

In her essay, Wells- Barnett compares the relationship between black men and white women to the relationship between Samson and Delilah from the Hebrew Bible. Her referencing the passages showed her to be an intelligent women who knew her subject matter and that she is able to think outside the box.

What three aspects of her writing style would you like to incorporate into your own?

Three aspects from Wells- Barnett’s writing style that I would love to incorporate in my own writing is the way she is able to make her point without straying from her story and referencing things that are irrelevant. I would also love to be able to invoke emotions the way she does in my audience. I love how she successfully incorporates references into her writing that are interesting and show how knowledgeable she is.

Hour 6.5- 9

Assignment: Read Wells Speech on “The Requisites of True Leadership” (see .pdf here) and answer the following questions.

What does Wells believe makes up a true leader?

Wells- Barnett believes that a qualities that make up a true leader are leader who are devoted to principle, have perseverance and patience, displays self-control, and is philanthropic.

How does her description of a leader compare to the examples we have looked at so far (Telemachus, Neoptolemus, Cyrus, Lysistrata, the women in Plutarch’s Virtues of Women)?

Most of the characteristics that Wells- Barnett shows in her writings can be compared to the teachings of the Persian education System that exists during the time of Cyrus the Great. The persian education system (Agoge) allowed children to be trained by the state, at home which allowed them to be disciplined and work together.

What can you infer from the speech about what Wells believes is the process by which someone becomes a leader? How does this process compare to our discussions of mentorship, education, and outrage?

One of the things that Wells- Barnett claims that are the most important is a good education. Her belief in education is what she believes will help leader to be made. She believes that mentoring young minds and sending them forth into the world to teach others is how we make more leaders.
