The Dream

Running through the forest for my life as death hunts me mercilessly. A strange thing or animal has attacked my family, and I cannot do anything to save them except run. After what it seems like a long time, I skid to a stop behind a tree, bending my body over and breathing in large gulps of air.

The eeriness of the forest settles over me as I realize there is no wind, no sounds of leaves rustling like everything has gone to sleep. The only thing I can hear is the roar of my blood and my heart beating wildly against my chest. A low growl reverberated through the forest, alerting me to run again. Death comes in various forms, for some, it’s loved ones beckoning us, for me? A growl that made me run blindly for my life, taunting me like prey before its kill.

The starless night covers the forest like a blanket making it hard to see through the woods. I tripped over a root and fell to my knees. I close my eyes; there is no way out, no escape as I wait for my death to arrive. A hot breath fans my neck making me open my eyes, and I jerk awake in my bed. My body drenched in sweat, and I’m thankful for the cool breeze coming through the open windows. The same dream been’s haunting my sleep for almost fortnight now, and it ends in precisely the same way every time. I get up from my bed and towards the door. A low but the same horrifying growl emanates from the other side of the door. My whole body freezes as the knob turns on its own.
