Essential Tips for Social Media Fundraising

Looking to use social media to boost your fundraising efforts? Here’s a few tips on how you can do it!

Step 1 — Set up your fundraising profile: It’s important to pick a central online location where you can manage all of your donations. When posting content, always provide the link to your profile to help people easily donate.

There are more and more options so do look into which works best for your goals. Here are some platforms we’ve had some experience with that might help, but we’re also preparing a more in-depth review of such services so pop back later for our future blog (we’ll link here when ready).

Step 2 — Work out what to say and share

For some people just a quick request might be enough, but to really get support, bigger donations and also affect behaviour or opinion about your cause it’s best to stay connected with your supporters. This way they can continue to support you, and you can reassure them of your progress. Below are some ideas of what you can say and share:

Share your story:

Once you have set up your platforms, you should provide context into how and why you started this challenge. Use this opportunity to post about what inspired you to raise funds for a cause, why did you choose a specific organization to support and what are you trying to accomplish once you reach your fundraising mark. It’s important to discuss your goals so your supporters can help you succeed.

In addition, you can use these posts as a tool to showcase your journey in preparation for race day, while also raising money for your charity. Here are a few tips for making this happen:

Give people your training plan:

Share your training regimen with your supporters so they can follow your improvement in preparation for race day. You can make these sessions a part of your fundraising efforts by encouraging your followers to donate money in different ways, for example: host a training session where your followers are encouraged to join by paying 5€-10€. You can also purchase or create a funny costume and welcome your supporters to pay a certain amount for you to train with that gear.

Another interesting idea would be to create a countdown to race day where you encourage your followers to donate every day or every few days in an attempt to reach your goals before race day. These are some of the many ideas you can implement so your supporters can sponsor your efforts in an engaging way. Planning a 10km run? Tell them if you hit an extra €50 overnight you’ll make it 15km (as long as that’s not too much a stretch for you).

Where does the money go?

You care about your cause so help others to care too. Giving out a detailed explanation of what your chosen charity does and how their money will be utilized is a great way to motivate your supporters. Show them how much of an impact their money will have; if necessary, break it up into tiers so they know what 10€, 20€, 50€ and 100€ donations can do for the cause. This will help motivate them to donate increasing amounts to your efforts and inspire them to make an impact.

A race summary

A fundamental aspect of fundraising is the act of thanking those who have supported your campaign. It is imperative to take the time to provide an overview of the event. For this, you should discuss the amount of funds you have accumulated from the campaign and how much will be donated. Additionally, you should state whether or not you accomplished your goals for the campaign. People will want to know of your methods and whether or not they were effective.

Step 3: Choosing where to share

We know you’re probably on some of these platforms already, but taking advantage of all of their features will make your philanthropic goals a reality . Here’s the main platforms you should use to create a strong following and maximize your fundraising efforts.

Instagram: is great for providing updates and engaging your audience in a visual way. While the general rule for instagram captions is “less is more”, you can use these to share your journey with your followers. Put out short descriptions of your motivations to run for charity, share what your fundraising goals are, and explain the steps you’re taking to fulfill them. Don’t forget to add hashtags and tag the pages of your cause — so more people can follow them too.

Also, their “stories” feature is very visible, so it’s a perfect way to show people what you’re doing on a daily basis. You should post daily snippets of the main tasks at hand or updates on your upcoming events to show the community how passionate you are.

Finally, it is super important that you link your donations page on your profile and mention it in your posts. Once you have set up the URL as a part of your profile, mention that “the link to make donations is the bio” to let people know how they can support your cause.

Facebook: is perfect for creating and mobilizing groups. While you should definitely share information on your personal profile, creating a group will boost the reach and social interaction you are seeking with supporters. Create a Facebook Group so your followers can join and have up to date information about all of your events and campaign. Create a schedule for posting content on a weekly basis and use all of the platform’s tools to your advantage. For example:

Another great thing about Facebook groups is that you can invite people to individual events as well. If you’re organizing or participating training runs or workouts, send out invites so people can join you easily and get firsthand information of what you’re trying to accomplish.

Twitter: is about creating conversation and encouraging proactivity. Post pictures and videos regularly to encourage people to learn about your story, and then focus on creating conversations with them. Ask questions, like their posts, follow them and provide feedback on their comments. Create hashtags associated with your event and be consistent in adding them to all of your posts. The more you engage with your supporters, the more exposure this platform will bring to your events.

Don’t forget to add your fundraising page URL on your bio and let people know the best way they can contact you.

These are just some of our core tips on using social media to help fundraise towards a cause. We’d love to hear what worked for you and if you have any tips to share with other people.
