Over the last decade, I’ve been on all the side of the interview table. Personally, I have an issue with the standard interview process because I think it’s not the right tool for the task. The purpose of an interview is to evaluate whether a person has the skills to be successful in the role a company is looking to fill and whether the person is a good “culture fit” for the team/company. At most companies, the interview process does not have a standard method and therefore leads to a very biased set of results.
With those caveats in mind, here are some questions I’ve used over the years that help uncover a designers experience and approach to challenges that they will face. Though I disagree with this method, needs must, so this is the best way to suss out a persons previous experience to see if they currently have the skills to tackle the interpersonal challenges of UX design.
