What is Sharing Economy?

With the development of shared economy, it has become a victim of its own success. Some people are partly right to accuse that sharing most of the economy today is not really sharing. On the one hand, there are many platforms that support the true spirit of sharing — underutilized assets and community building — and on the other hand, more and more “equity laundering” is underway: companies are grabbing the term because it makes them part of a popular trend. Who doesn’t want to associate the concept of community and cooperation?

The example of confusion is Uber. When drivers rent a car they didn’t have before to provide a car they wouldn’t have taken, is it a ride sharing? Hardly any. However, for most of the public and the media, Uber is one of the most popular examples of sharing the economy. In other words, newer products like Lyft Line and Uber Pool are excellent examples of ride sharing: they make cars more efficient and stop all the way. But they represent only a small part of the amusement facilities currently provided. More broadly, when an entrepreneur claims to be an “X Uber,” it is a direct red flag of suspicion about sharing economic status.
