Practice the Maui Habit to Build a Success Mindset

It was developed by a Stanford behaviour scientist

This lab has been attended by many product designers and web entrepreneurs who later went on to build addictive features of apps like Facebook, Instagram and many more. Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, the founders of Instagram also attended this lab.

The creations that came as a result of this lab are quite well known, and controversial for their ability to hook consumers into a never-ending cycle of infinite scrolls, red coloured notifications and like buttons.

Undoubtedly, this was the most influential class of our generation which helped create apps that are now consumed, often mindlessly, by billions of consumers.

However, Dr B.J Fogg also helped create the Fogg Behaviour Model, which he details out in his book, “Tiny Habits”. The model can be used to help build and sustain any habit in your life.

In the book, Dr B.J Fogg talks about the value of building small habits which can then be scaled up. He talks about one particular habit that he claimed to have had a huge impact on him and hence his favourite habit.

He called the habit, The Maui Habit.

He calls it the Maui habit because he first started practising it in the island of Maui, Hawaii when he got a birthday gift of a ukulele and a greeting card from a friend on which it was written: “Every Day is A Gift.”

This gave him the idea of remembering these words every day and that is how The Maui Habit was born.

What is the Maui Habit? Each day when you get up from your bed you repeat these words “ Today is going to be a great day”. You can replace the words and sentence a bit e.g “ Today is going to be an amazing day” or “It is going to be an awesome day today”.

On the surface this seems a silly idea, that merely repeating these words the first thing in the morning when you get out of your bed, will help you be successful.
